COMMON QUERIES

HOW ARE PAWTASTIC PRODUCTS PET SAFE?

Did you know that burning standard wax melts or scented candles (you know, the type you get in most high street stores) can in fact be harmful to our pets. About 70% of scented candles and wax melts sold in shops contain ingredients which can cause harm to our pets. Ingredients such as Paraffin Wax, Lead, Benzene and artificial scents can all have a detrimental effect on ours and our pets health. They can cause damage to their central nervous system and can trigger respiratory problems. Pawtastic's candles and wax melts are handmade in Manchester from natural ingredients. 100% soy wax and 100% natural essential oils mean they are allergen free and vegan friendly.

The creator of Pawtastic, Karen is the proud owner of pets herself. She wanted to find a way to freshen up her home without having to burn harmful chemicals. After much research into the different essential oils which provide benefits for you and are non-toxic to your pets, Pawtastic was born.

WHY HAS MY WAX MELT GONE 'FLUFFY' ON MY WAX BURNER?

This is a common occurance when the wax burner does not get hot enough to fully melt all of the wax right to the edges. This is due to the burner which is being used having large front / rear cavities where the air flow isnt letting the burner get hot enough and it can also be due to the heat source (Tealight usually) not being large enough to fully heat the burner to the edge of the wax burner. If this happens simply push the 'fluffy' wax toward the centre of the burner where it will be at its hottest.

WHY SOY?

We choose to work with soy wax for a variety of reasons. We love that it's a 100% renewable resource and carbon neutral. We love that it burns more cleanly - and better yet - for a longer period of time than paraffin. We love the way soy wax smells mixed with a good essential oil. Soy candles are better for the environment and your health: they are non-toxic and burn cleaner than paraffin wax. It produces as much as 90% less soot than paraffin wax. This soot can blacken walls, ceilings, and furniture, contaminate ventilation ductwork in your home, and most importantly, add toxic carcinogens into the air that you breathe.

WHY TRIM THE WICK BEFORE EACH USE AND LIMIT BURNING TIME TO 4 HOURS PER USE?

These are common instructions and good practices for any candle and are meant to prolong a candle’s burn time. A longer wick creates a larger flame, a larger flame melts the wax faster, and the wax melts faster than the wick burns away. So the longer your candle burns, the larger the flame gets, causing your candle to melt faster and faster. Keeping the wick trimmed and burning 4 hours at a time slows everything down so you get a longer burn time.
Additionally, burning your candle for 4 hours at a time ensures that the wax melts all the way to the edge of the container. The melted wax (not the flame) is what gives off your candle’s scent, so this will maximise your candle’s scent when lit. It will also prevent your candle from “tunnelling”, or burning a hole down the centre of the candle while leaving a ring of un-melted wax along the inside of the container.

HOW MANY CANDLES SHOULD I BURN IN MY ROOM?

This one is the most important question and some people often complain that there is no fragrance in a candle. So, the total number of candles you should be burning so that the entire room smells good depends upon the size of the room. One scented candle might be enough for a small room or bathroom, but for a larger room or hallway, you should burn at least two scented candles together.

WHY DOES FROSTING APPEAR ON THE INSIDE OF THE GLASS CANDLES?

Certain aspects can affect your finished product, but the fact is Soy wax is a natural product and is susceptible to temperature changes. Frosting is a natural characteristic of soy and is part of the soy experience! It is not a flaw, and it is strictly unique to pure soy candles. Frosting does not affect the scent throw or the burning properties of the candle. Try to keep your candle out of direct sunlight and fluorescent lighting. Even changes in the weather can cause additional frosting. It is almost impossible to stop the soy wax from frosting/blooming. It's just one of the beautiful and natural features of this wonderful wax.

WHY DO WET SPOTS APPEAR ON THE INSIDE OF THE GLASS CANDLES?

Sometimes you may notice that it looks like your candle has a wet spot, this is not actually a wet spot, but an air cavity. With some candle containers, the Soy wax has a tendency pull away from the container side causing an air pocket. This is normal. It could be caused by the difference in room and jar temperature, or the temperature of the room the candle is in while setting. Sometimes it can happen after the candle has set and the wax shrinks. I’ve had jars that look perfect when made, but after being exposed to fluctuations in temperature they change in appearance. This will not affect the candle burn or scent throw of your candle.

CAN OUR PRODUCTS BE RECYCLED?

We are asked all the time about recycling candle jars and what to do with the last 10mm of wax left in these jars (that last bit is important as you can risk breakage of the jar if you burn beyond this point)
But rest assured, that last 10mm of wax and indeed the jar, is never wasted. We are all about recycling here at Pawtastic and so here's what we do when our favourite candles get to the bottom of their jar:

  1. Blow your candle out and allow it to cool to room temperature.

  2. Pop the whole candle jar into the freezer for 20 minutes

  3. When you take the candle out, the wax will have shrunk away from the sides of the glass and will fall out easily and you can wash out and dry your jar.

  4. The jar can now be recycled.

  5. Break up the remaining wax and place onto your wax burner to utilise this last amount of wax.
